I’m an extrovert. As a writer, my personality is somewhat counter to my chosen art form. Being a writer is one of those consuming things that requires you to leave this world and all of its lovely people behind and enter your own mind for long periods of time. So, how do extroverts do it? Here are a few things that help me:

1. Put on the headphones. I also love music. The sounds and rhythms of certain styles, especially classical and romantic era instrumental peices, allow my mind to focus. But, more than anything, the headphones block out the world and tell other people, “I’m in the zone. Leave me alone.”

2. Make a nest. I love my recliner. It’s a comfortable, leather seat that lets way back and gives me lots of room to be comfy in and spread out. This is my nest for writing at home. I have a little lap desk and my notebook laptop which allow me to sit comfortably in the chair and ease myself into my head. When I’m in my nest, I’m ready to write from a special place.

3. Wait until they’re all sleeping. I actually feel guilty writing when other people are around. I feel like I should give them my attention. This is especially true for family. When I’m at home and my wife and boys are around, I want to give them the attention they deserve. Thus, I’ve found it best to write after they’ve gone to bed. Then, I can give my attention wholly to my writing.

If you are like me, you might need to do some of these things to help you find the place BETWEEN. I wish you well in your journey.
