AIR UNIVERSITY AND THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION: A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE – ABSTRACT and Intro
I recently wrote a paper detailing some information related to a transformation taking place at the US Air Force’s Air University. This is the abstract and introduction for the paper. There will be more to come in the coming days and weeks.
As technology and society grow rapidly in parallel, the need to maintain, and perhaps even exceed, the development of students and institutions of higher learning continues to burgeon. The accelerated proliferation of information and educational requirements present challenges for any institution of higher learning, particularly in the areas of new learning strategies and the holistic education of those who use them. As economists, educators, and technologists have known for some time, the only way to keep their fields and the information in them relevant is to stay one or more steps ahead by forecasting what the future technology, trends, and solutions will be in the future. This is where research concerning what is possible now and what may be possible three or more years from now becomes vital to the growth and relevance of education. In this literature review, information concerning future trends in community, diversity, education, innovation, the whole person, and writing and research will be presented and unpacked. The overall purpose is to give Air University leadership a broad overview of information regarding where education is going and how AU can get there while staying timely and relevant.
The purpose of this literature review is to provide a framework by which to frame an understanding of the future of education within institutions of higher learning, specifically within the AU environment. Generally, the most appropriate way to approach this type of scaffolding is through a review of the most contemporaneous studies on the subject. Therefore, all of the articles referenced will be taken from studies conducted within the last three years. The first area to be explored will focus on the community of learning in an effort to explore the importance of collaboration and communication within the higher education construct. Second, diversity will be discussed, partly due to its close association with community and also because of its value within society as a whole. Next, education in general will be discussed with special attention given to its future and developing trends therein. Innovation will be examined next due to the special place it holds as it relates to the future of education, technology, and trends associated with both areas. Education for the whole person in the next topic and will deal with the emotional, physical, and other areas of the whole being and how these areas relate to higher learning and its aims and requirements. Finally, writing and research, the foundation of any higher learning environment will be observed for its value in establishing present and future educational buttresses. Altogether, the topics will be examined and clarified as to how they apply to AU and the future of education in general.
